Back in the old days, a material of choice for dental cavity filling was that silver (amalgam) filling.
Even though it's mercury, it's been proven safe. Or so we thought.
However, Lewisville Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Park does not approve these silver fillings in his office for several reasons.
1. Always hairline fracture noted around these silver fillings. Thus,it's safe to believe it weakens the surrounding natural tooth structure, making your tooth prone to tooth fracture.
2. Since it's heavy metal, over time, it corrodes. In doing so, it stains your tooth dark. On X-ray, this tooth did not raise any doubt that there might be active caries. However, when we opened it up, there was in fact active recurrent caries.
3. Esthetically, it's UGLY. When you have options to make it look natural, why would you want to have such an eye sore remaining in your mouth?
This is the result!
What a difference!
