How Whitening Works

Various forms of tooth discoloration occurs due to food, beverages, smoking, ageing, disease, medical treatment, poor oral hygiene, genetic conditions, fluorosis, or some medications such as tetracycline.

Modern teeth whitening is based upon the active bleaching agents (hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide), which break down and quickly disassociate into water and oxygen ions. These oxygen ions enter the stained tooth enamel and attack the long stain molecules to effectively break them down to be short and colorless. These short and colorless molecules are then naturally removed from the tooth by saliva, resulting in a bright smile. The intensity of whitening is related to the number of oxygen ions available and the length of time they are on the tooth.
